After three seasons, Fox has cancelled The X Factor .

The cancellation was not all too surprising, given how low the ratings had fallen this season.  The premiere did a low 2.2 A18-49 demo, down nearly 25% year-to-year.  Near the season, The X Factor slumped to a mere 1.0 A18-49 demo.  The finale improved slightly, but it was still down a huge 45% from the demo only one year ago.

Simon Cowell said the show would return for a fourth season, but at the TCA's in January, Kevin Reilly was a bit less optimistic.  He said the show was underperforming, and no renewal was  in place, but they we're exploring possible options.  It appears with the cancellation, Fox was ready to move on.

In a bit of an usual move, Fox actually sent a press release out regarding the cancellation.  It mentioned Simon Cowell returning to The X Factor in Britain as a reason for pulling the plug after three seasons.

Now the question turns to what Fox will do with three hours of free space on the fall schedule.  Do they order more new series?  Do bubble shows get another chance?  What do you think will happen when they announce the fall schedule?  Sound off in the comments section below!
