Review: Parenthood

Parenthood - Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC

NBC's Parenthood has now been on the air for three seasons, something many thought would never happen. After many strong episodes this season, I decided it was time to review NBC's #1 drama.

With such a large cast, you think it would be difficult to fall in love with every single person, but it has been surprisingly easy - especially this season. Let's now dive into the main character plots that have happened thus far this season.

Perhaps the biggest change would be the addition of a new Braverman; baby Nora (who I'm assuming is named for the late NBC producer who died on set during season one). It adds yet another character to the series, but I think its a great addition. It fully allows us to see how this large family deals with a new child in the clan. It also brings out the terrific acting of Monica Potter, who left her family in the middle of the road while wanting to go play mini-golf in last week's (11/1/11) episode. Babies usually add nothing to a series, but I think this is an addition that will have a positive impact on the series.

Even with the addition of baby Nora, another baby looks to be on the way. Julie Braverman-Graham (Erika Christensen) and Joel Graham (Sam Jaeger) already have a seven-eight year old daughter, but want another child. We learned last season that Julie is unable to have another baby, but it appears that her co-worker will give up her child to Julie, through adoption. This offers yet another look into how this family deals with pain and somehow finds various options to get to where they want. I'm hoping for the best between Julie and Joel; they really deserve it.

Another positive of the season would be the expanded look at Amber (Mae Whitman) and Drew (Miles Heizer). For over two seasons, it always felt like Drew was just there for the hell of it. His character has expanded the most we have seen in three seasons, which even includes the addition of his first girlfriend (from the 11/8/11 episode). I think every viewer has always felt love for Drew, so to see him get a girlfriend is a major positive. Props also have to be given to Mae Whitman for her portrayal of Amber, the eldest daughter of Sarah Braverman (Lauren Graham). She moved out of her grandparents house and now has her own apartment. We have really seen her grow since the pilot episode, where she had a loser of a boyfriend. She never did go to college, but it offers a different spectrum of how to look at life.

The storyline between Crosby Braverman (Dax Sheperd) and Jasmine Trussell (Joy Bryant) is also very strong this season. Jasmine has moved on from her relationship with Crosby and recently started dating their sons doctor. There is a lot more to be explored with these relationships, since they just began two-three episodes ago, but it'll be exciting.

While there have been numerous positives this season, there are also some disappointments. My biggest complaint would be that Haddie Braverman (Sarah Ramos) and Max Braverman (Max Burkholder) seemed to have been pushed to the back. After Haddie's breakup earlier this season, it seems she has no storyline to work with, even with college coming up for her by next season (should there be one). Max, who has always been a terrific actor in this series, seems to be nowhere now, except for an occasional line. I understand that his storyline has been pretty much explored, but there has to be something there for him to do. I'm hoping the writers really make him sparkle again!

Parenthood continues to get better and better each season, with the third season the best yet. If you've never seen Parenthood before, it'll be difficult to start now, but I'd try buying the DVD's and get into it as soon as possible. If you are a current viewer, I think you'd agree that this has been a terrific season thus far.

Review: Two and a Half Men

Two and a Half Men - Mondays at 9/8c on CBS

The new Two and a Half Men has been on the air for over a month and a half now, and it's time for a review of the season.

Season nine is great - with the exception of Ashton Kutcher. Jon Cryer continues to hit it out of the park, while we have seen even more of Holland Tyler and Conchata Ferrell. Angus T. Jones continues to act like a nine year old boy, and brings out the laughs. Now, lets dig a bit deeper into the all new Two and a Half Men.

Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher) acts like a twelve year old boy who just got dumped by his first girlfriend. He whines week after week and gets whatever he wants. While Charlie Harper (Charlie Sheen) had numerous women each week, you always rooted for him to get as many women as possible. With Walden, however, it's a completely different story. Somehow he has been able to get women, yet it feels very uncomfortable to watch. The overwhelming wealth that Walden has also seems to be a bit of an issue for me. In these tough economic times, who wants to watch someone with loads of money whining how bad their life is at the moment? Walden needs a makeover with his personality (and some would say his physical appearance as well) before he annoys more viewers from their seats.

Not everything has been bad this season though. Jon Cryer continues to put out Emmy-worthy acting despite the loss of Charlie Sheen. In tonights episode he acts like Charlie Harper, and it's a hoot of an episode. If Jon Cryer keeps up the good work, then the season will be better than that of season eight (and perhaps, seven).

I also like the fact that Berta (Conchata Ferrell) moved into the house with Walden and Alan. It allows more screen time for the terrific, yet underrated, actress. Her comedic timing continues to be perfect in the series, and with more of her, it means less of Ashton Kutcher.

If you liked the old Two and a Half Men, then you should enjoy the new Two and a Half Men as well. It's for sure not the same show as it was before, but it has a lot of the same "charm" as previous seasons. The show will never regain what it had with Charlie Sheen, but there is more storyline to explore later this season, and most likely, next season. Even if you have never seen Two and a Half Men, I'd suggest watching!

CSI vs. Law and Order: SVU

The second battle of the series is crime shows CSI vs. Law and Order: SVU. Both shows were once major hits for their networks, and are now shells of their former selves. Anyways, CSI and Law and Order: SVU will each compete in the Wednesday 10pm hour. This is the third time Law and Order: SVU will air in the timeslot, after airing in the slot for the second half of the 2009-2010 season and the second half of the 2010-2011 season. CSI moves to the timeslot after spending most of its run on Thursdays at 9pm. The question: which series will win between the two?

Supernatural vs. Fringe vs. Grimm

I'm going to try something a bit new this year - similar show battles. The first one is bound to gain considerable interest since Fringe and Supernatural are both involved. Supernatural, Fringe, and Grimm all have a "science fiction" feel to them and air a 9pm on Friday nights. Supernatural aired in the timeslot all of last season, while Fringe aired half of its season on the low-rated night. Grimm, a new series from NBC, will be pitted against the fan-favorite series. This brings up the question, which series will win between the three?

As of August 6th, five TNT series have been renewed for another season (The Closer, Leverage, Men of a Certain Age, Rizzoli and Isles, and Southland). However, three other TNT series have yet to recieve a renewal for another season (Dark Blue, Hawthorne, Memphis Beat). VH1 is bringing back Dr. Drew's Sober House for a second season and Celebrity Fit Club for a seventh season. Joining VH1 in 2010 is an untitled Pepa Show, an untitled Chilli Show, and The Entertainer. The untitled Pepa Show will follow the life of Pepa, and will be shown in eight half hour episodes. The untitled Chilli Show will show Chilli and her life while looking for the one. VH1 ordered eight half hour episodes of the show. Finally, The Entertainer will get his own love show as he tries to move out of his parents basement. VH1 has ordered 10 one hour episodes of the show.

The series will then continue on Sundays at 8:00/7:00c and Tuesdays at 9:00/8:00c, a slight deviation from last summer's initial schedule of Sundays at 8:00/7:00c, Tuesdays at 9:00/8:00c and Wednesdays at 8:00/7:00c. (Two weeks later, the latter edition moved to Thursdays at 8:00/7:00c in place of "Greatest American Dog.")
Meanwhile, "The Big Bang Theory," "The Mentalist" and "How I Met Your Mother" are set to move to their new fall homes starting next month.
"The Mentalist" will shift to Thursdays at 10:00/9:00c beginning June 4. Repeats will still continue in its old Tuesday, 9:00/8:00c home until "Big Brother" takes over on July 14.
"Big Bang" likewise will jump to Mondays at 9:30/8:30c starting June 8 with "Mother" assuming the 8:00/7:00c slot on June 22. "Rules of Engagement" will fill out the night at 8:30/7:30c.
In addition, "48 Hours Mystery" will expand to twice a week starting June 2 with episodes airing Tuesdays at 10:00/9:00c and Saturdays at 10:00/9:00c.

How I Met Your Mother?

If you caught last nights episode of How I Met Your Mother, you would have noticed that Stella was back. Ted was still mad at Stella for leaving him on their wedding day, and Ted accidently broke Stella and Tony up! Stella and Tony, as it said in the episode, moved to California and Tony was creating a movie called "The Wedding Bride." If you looked closely, it said May 2010 as the release date of the movie. Could this be foreshadowing something? Maybe the month and year we finally see who Ted is marrying?!?!?

Honestly, I think FOX has one of the easiest jobs at mid-season. Why? Almost all of their shows have bombed, or done great. However, there are still a few shows that may or may not be cancelled. As of now the following shows will be back for sure next year: American Dad, American Idol, America's Most Wanted, Cops, Family Guy, Fringe, Hells Kitchen, House, Kitchen Nightmares, The Simpsons, and 'Til Death. These shows are on the bubble for next year: Bones, Lie to Me, and Secret Millionaire. Just to make the poll a bit more interesting, I added Dollhouse and Terminator: TSCC. CBS, the only major English network to see increases this year, has very tough decisions to make within the next few days/weeks. As of right now, CBS has renewed Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Survivor, and The Amazing Race. It's almost 100% likely that Criminal Minds, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, How I Met Your Mother, The Mentalist and NCIS will return next season. That leaves some tough choices for CBS. Will CBS keep their low demo-rated comedies The New Adventures of Old Christine, and Gary Unmarried? What about veterans Cold Case and Without a Trace; will they be cut due to increasing costs? Will all three of CBS' Friday Night shows remain on the network? Also thrown into the bubble shows pile is freshman Eleventh Hour, expensive The Unit, and comedy Rules of Engagement (because of its special Wednesday airing in a few weeks). FOX Renews The Cleveland Show

Before airing a single episode, FOX has ordered a second season of The Cleveland show. 35 episodes have been ordered through 2 seasons. The reason for the renewal was so that production would not stop as animation takes quite a long time to make. This means The Cleveland Show should air through Fall 2010.

That doesn't leave many spots for new shows, or bubble shows, does it? ABC's bubble shows include Castle, Surviving Suburbia, Samantha Who, Better off Ted (surprising, I know), Scrubs (again?), The Unusuals, and Cupid. TNT Announces Summer Dates

TNT has three new shows this summer, and three old ones will be returning. The three new shows are Wedding Day, HawthoRNe, and Dark Blue. Returning this summer to TNT is Saving Grace, Raising the Bar, and Leverage.

Mondays (Starting June 8th)
9:00 - The Closer
10:00 - Raising the Bar

Tuesdays (Starting June 16th)
8:00 - Wedding Day
9:00 - HawthoRNe
10:00 - Saving Grace

Wednesdays (Starting July 15th)
9:00 - Leverage
10:00 - Dark Blue

In my opinion, Tuesday nights will most likely be the weakest night of the three. Saving Grace saw a huge decline when airing without the lead in of The Closer. Plus two new shows will air before Saving Grace, is it the safest move? Maybe not, but let's wait and see. Monday and Wednesday nights will be close as Raising the Bar and Dark Blue may be weak links in their timeslot. The Closer and Leverage should be able to do the best when they return. The Singing Bee - Coming This June

Remember a few weeks back when I told you that CMT was bringing back The Singing Bee? Well, The Hollywood Reporter now has more information on the revival of the cancelled NBC series. The Singing Bee will premiere on CMT after the CMT Awards on June 16th. It will then move to it's regular timeslot on June 20th with Can You Duet.

Here are the changes CMT is making:
* 60% of the songs will be a mix of country, 40% of the songs will be other types of music
* The "Bee Dancers" are gone

CMT has ordered 10 episodes of The Singing Bee.

Many Schedule Changes

Today was full of schedule changes. First, let's start with CBS. CBS announced earlier today that they would be moving Harper's Island after just three episodes. Harper's Island will now air Saturdays at 9:00/8:00c. The Thursday 10:00/9:00c slot will be filled with repeats of Criminal Minds, CSI, a new episode of CSI:NY, and other changes that will be announced soon . FOX also made a few changes today. The two week old Sit Down, Shut Up has been pulled from its post-Simpsons timeslot. Sit Down, Shut Up will now air at 7:00/6:00c, with a repeat of American Dad at 7:30/6:30c. King of the Hill will move back to it's old timeslot at 8:30/7:30c.

As many of you have heard by now, the President will be speaking at 8:00/7:00c on Wednesday. So, we have more scheduling changes! ABC, CBS, and NBC will all be airing the special 100 Day Obama Press Conference. FOX on the other hand will keep Lie to Me in its regular timeslot, as will The CW with America's Next Top Model.

Within a few weeks, networks will be making the decisions on which shows to keep. NBC will most likely have the toughest job with the 10pm hour going to Jay Leno. With Law and Order: SVU, 30 Rock, The Office, Heroes, and The Biggest Loser coming back already, that takes 4-5 hours off the schedule (5 if The Biggest Loser remains 2 hours; Friday Night Lights not included as it will air during midseason). That leaves only 4-5 hours remaining from Monday-Friday. NBC's bubble shows include Chuck, Medium, My Name is Earl, and Law and Order. Also thrown onto the bubble list, you could include NBC's two newest shows; Southland and Parks and Recreation. Obviously NBC will have new shows next fall as well, so they don't have many shows to keep. That leads us to the question in the poll to the right, which bubble shows should NBC renew? ABC Family Says Bye To Sophie, More Roommates

ABC Family has pulled Sophie from it's Monday 9:30 timeslot due to low ratings. There is still 8 episodes left, but its unlikely that they will ever be seen in the United States. With that announcement comes more bad news. ABC Family is adding more Roommates, but not in a good way. Instead of one episode a night, there will not be 4 episodes a night. Yes, thats right four. Four episodes will be shown this week, while the final four will air next week. It seems 100% likely that Roommates is gone as well. Roommates will air from 9:00-11:00pm, replacing a repeat of America's Funniest Home Videos for two weeks.

When Will The Red John Case Be Solved?

If you watch The Mentalist on CBS, you should already know who I'm talking about. If not, Red John is the man who murdered Patrick Jane's family before the series began. So when will viewers be able to see Red John? The answer? The SERIES finale. Sure that is most likely not this season, but maybe next season? The Creator of The Mentalist, Bruno Heller: "It’s something that will run throughout the series — it’s a series ender, not a season ender. There’s lot of wrinkles and twists down that path before we get to it. It’s the epic underpinning of the series that gives it weight. It’s the plot version of the darkness inside the lead character and it’s important it remain a part of the show." The series finale isnt writen just yet, but Heller says this: “I got the bones of it, yeah. I know where I’m taking it.”

New ADA On SVU Is Leaving

Wow, thats a lot of data. Now you may be asking yourself why Rules of Engagement is on this list. I placed it on the list because it has never aired without the huge lead in of Two and a Half Men and CBS is airing it in a few weeks on a Wednesday night. If Rules of Engagement fails to deliver on that Wednesday night, you can say goodbye to it. So the fate of Gary Unmarried lies in the hands of Rules of Engagaement. If Rules of Engagement does fail and gets cancelled, Gary Unmarried could return midseason behind Two and a Half Men if the new show at 9:30 fails. While Old Christine does have lower numbers then Gary Unmarried in both new episodes and repeat episodes, I'm betting CBS will renew it for some syndication money. Perhaps 13 episodes in the fall of midseason next year at 8:00pm on Wednesdays. CBS sure has a lot of decisions on their hands. I want to know your thoughts though. So, the question in the poll to the right is: Which CBS comedy (of the three mentioned) should be cancelled?

Is The Bee Back To Life?

Remember The Singing Bee on NBC back in 2007? Well, it appears its coming back now. However, not on NBC. It looks as if CMT is picking up the show. Of course CMT is Country Music, so the format will change. 60% of the songs would be from country, while 40% of the songs would be from the past 40 years. What do you think about this? ABC Ending Relationship With Cupid, Again?

Next Tuesdays episode of Cupid (10pm) is being pre-empted by a new episode of The Unusuals (10pm on Wednesdays). This looks like ABC is testing to see its retention with a different audience. The Unusuals will air the next day, Wednesday, in its regular slot. Cupid will return to the Tuesday spot the following week.

Southland Stays Strongs, Harper's Island Falls Victim To Lower Ratings

In week two of the Southland vs. Harper's Island battle, Southland was clearly the winner. While I enjoy Harper's Island a bit more then Southland, most viewers like Southland more. Southland was watched by 9.6 million viewers, and reached a 3.1 demo amongst 18-49 year olds. Southland retained almost 95% of its audience from last weeks series premiere. Not bad for an NBC show, huh? Harper's Island on the other hand fell to 8.2 million viewers, and reached a 2.2 demo amongst 18-49 year olds. That's a drop of about 15% from last weeks series premiere. I hope most viewers return to Harper's Island, because last nights episode was very good. I did not expect a lot of the stuff, so be sure to check it out. Next week, Private Practice returns with new episodes, so expect some ratings changes again.

Showtime Says No Again

In a surprising move, Showtime on Friday passed on Tim Robbins' well-regarded pharmaceutical drama pilot "Possible Side Effects."
That makes it 0-4 for the premium cable network, which originally ordered four pilots in this go-round, including "Side Effects."
In the past week, Showtime passed on the other three pilots, the "L Word" spinoff starring Leisha Hailey, the Matthew Perry/Peter Tolan comedy "The End of Steve" and the comedy "Ronna and Beverly," from Jessica Chaffin, Jamie Denbo and Jenji Kohan.
The dismissal of "Side Effects" is noteworthy because the project was penned and directed by Oscar winner Robbins and attracted top talent, including Ellen Burstyn, Josh Lucas and Tim Blake Nelson.
It is said to have tested very high, and with the other three pilots out of contention, it was considered a shoo-in for a series order.
Industry observers on Friday were scratching their heads over Showtime's decision, with some pointing to the show's subject matter as a potential reason.
"Side Effect" takes a scathing look at the pharmaceutical drug industry, focusing on a dysfunctional family behind a major drug concern.
As a premium cable network, Showtime does not rely on advertisers, but its parent company CBS Corp. does, and pharmaceutical companies are among the top TV advertisers.
Like several other pilots rejected by Showtime, "Side Effects" might be shopped elsewhere.
